A Cry for Justice

While the public health crisis of COVID-19 is new and visible, the last week has reminded America of another public health crisis that is 400 years old: racism. Despite America’s long history of racism, from slavery to segregation to the prison-industrial complex, this is a topic that America has too long shied away from addressing, consigning the suffering of our black brothers and sisters to the silence of the margins. Yet this week, these brothers and sisters have lifted up their voices and led the world in crying for justice.

Therefore, we at Gregg Home Services humbly add our voice to this cry.

We name George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Freddie Gray, Philando Castile, Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and Tamir Rice.

We recognize that this list falls wildly short of the mark, and that the number of victims of police brutality is horrifically high.

We condemn the structural racism that allows these injustices, and we acknowledge that our silence and our white privilege have contributed to America’s structural racism.

We call on our local, state, and federal leaders to listen to the voices now raised, and to enact comprehensive anti-racist laws and policies.

We pledge to go forward, supporting local and national anti-racist organizations and committing to anti-racism within our own company.

As your hometown handyman, we want to work together for a hometown that is built on truth and justice, a hometown where Black Lives Matter.

After a journey through academia (St. John’s College and the University of St Andrews), I now work for my family’s home repair business. I work hard to balance this with my real full-time job: having a physical disability. If you really want to get to know me, talk to me about my favorite authors and books: the Inklings, Jane Austen, Dante Alighieri, and the collected writings in the Bible.
